Online Teaching Tools for Teachers

A lesson plans for teachers is the road map of what students need to learn and how it will be performed effectively during class time. As a first step, you will need to outline the learning objectives for the class. Then, teachers can create relevant learning exercises and improve strategies to get feedback on student learning.

An effective lesson gets students studying and enables them to participate, communicate and ask questions and build new skills. This blog gives useful tips for preparing engaging lesson plans that will help your students learn more about what they learnt.

An effective lesson plan for teachers combines these three key components:

  • Outcome-Based learning
  • Teaching/learning activities
  • Strategies to review student knowledge

Defining concrete objectives for student learning will help you determine the ways of teaching and learning activities you will use in class. In contrast, those activities will define how you will check whether the learning objectives have been accomplished.

6 Strategies for Effective Lesson Plans for Teachers

Below are six steps to lead you while creating their effective lesson plans. Each step is guided by a set of ideas meant to prompt reflection and aid you in planning your teaching and learning activities.

Outcome-Based learning

The first step is to define what you want students to learn and be able to do at the end of class. Once your “outcome-based learning objective” for the class is ready, you can concentrate on performance, skill, and knowledge gaps that hinder their development. Every element of the learning experience (online or in-class) is then aligned with the learning outcome. This makes it relatable and relevant, and increases the learner motivation and engagement.

Determine the purpose of the lesson plans for teachers

If teachers have a clear expectation, so will your students. Teachers are preparing their students for situations that teachers don't even know about yet.

But teachers could have objectives other than the learning of the student. For example – as a  teacher I may want to find out – if one activity works better than another – with a certain set of students. Or does including a soft skill story enhance the outcome of the class. Or I will try including a story in my session today to improve my skills and make my class more interesting.

Teachers could set such objectives to enhance their growth path and that for the students.

Plan the specific learning activities

Prepare many different ways of teaching the material to catch students attention and appeal to different learning styles. As you plan your patterns and activities, determine how much time you will spend on each. Build-in time for extended explanation or discussion and be prepared to move on quickly to different applications or problems and identify strategies that check for understanding.

The activities help to scaffold the student learning from different perspectives – so that it stays with the students.

Plan to check for understanding

Now that teachers have explained the topic illustrated it with different examples and helped the students to indulge in activities and discussions to scaffold their learning, the teacher wonders – how do I know that students are learning? Think about particular questions you can ask students to check for their learning and experience. Write these down, and then paraphrase them to prepare to ask the questions in various ways. Decide on whether you want students to answer orally or in writing.

When planning your lesson plans, decide what kinds of questions will be useful for writing and what questions might be oral. Oral questions create opportunity for students to ask questions also – but it could also divert the class. Decide on the balance between covering content and ensuring what the students understand.

Develop a conclusion and a preview

Go over the material included in the class by reviewing the main points of the lesson plans. You can review the student's answers to gauge their understanding of the topic and then explain anything unclear in the following class. Conclude the lesson not only by reviewing the main aims but also by previewing the next lesson. How does the topic compare to the one that's coming? This preview will encourage students interest and support them compare the different ideas within a larger context.

Make time for reflection

This is the time when you come together with your students and review what worked and what didn't. By monitoring, you will know if you have met your goals and determine if any changes need to be made.

To be effective, the lesson plan for teachers does not have to be a comprehensive document that explains each and every possible classroom summary. Nor does it have to assume each and every student's question or response. It should give you a general outline of your teaching goals, learning objectives, and means to accomplish them. It is a suggestion of what you need to do and how you need to do it. The perfect lesson plans for teachers are not one in which everything goes correctly as planned, but both students and teachers learn from each other.
